Dental Cleaning

A visit to the dentist is recommended once or twice a year for a proper dental examination. The average dental cleaning will take between 30 minutes to an hour. If the cleaning is part of the annual exam, the dentist may take x-rays to make certain no cavities, infections around the gum line, or tooth decay are present. Regular dental cleanings can prevent major dental problems.

A dental hygienist performs most of the cleaning and will use several tools during the procedure, including scalers which resemble a metal hook and are used to remove plaque buildup between the teeth. A tooth polisher is a tool that can buff teeth and eliminate tiny pieces of plaque causing teeth to feel smooth. A device that shoots water into the mouth may also be used to rinse out plaque during the cleaning.

After the cleaning the dentist will inquire about patient's daily oral hygiene habits, and give advice about how to care for teeth at home. It is recommended to have a regular dental cleaning every six months.
